The Yamagata Shinkansen's 400 Series was introduced in 1992 as a 6-car train, but was later expanded to a 7-car train. In 1999, it received a new paint design, replacing its old paint from its initial release in 2001. The entire series was retired in 2008 due to the introduction of the successor, the E3 series.
